Minister, President of the National Baptist Convention, USA Inc. (1953-1982). He was one of the nations dynamic orators of the Gospel. He served as pastor of the Olivet Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois (1941-1990). He bitterly opposed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's. civil-disobedience campaign, vigorously quashed liberal opposition within his denomination that half a million members (including King) left in 1961 to form the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. He also authored several books.
