Mildred E. Thorne, 93, a 35-year resident of Shiloh in King George, VA, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at her home. Born in Ardmore, MD on December 4, 1919, to Amos Claude and Besse Sipe Miller, she was the youngest of four children. She graduated as valedictorian, Maryland Park High School, Class of 1936. Mildred retired as an accountant with ARINC in 1978. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Niles DeWitt Thorne. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include her four children, Carlyn L. Krieger (Ron), Sandra E. McCarthy (Tim), Brian C. Thorne (Laurie) and Wanda Hendrickson; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered for her famous Santa Claus cookies.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 23rd at 12 Noon at Shiloh Baptist Church, with Revs. Mike Jessee and Charles Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends in the church's Family Life Center one hour prior to the service. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 or Shiloh Baptist Church, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, VA 22485.
