History of George Henry Brower: George Henry, the first born of General Jackson and Betty William Brower, was born September 9, 1859 in Brower Township, Randolph County. Born as a slave though slavery ended when he was very young.
At the age of four, George Henry was only a few days away from being given to Alfred Brower's daughter as a slave or servant in the state of Indiana. She was on her way to get him when the Civil War began and she unable to make the trip.
George Henry married Fannie Hassie Ritter in the year 1879. They lived in Ritter Township in 1880 with Hassie's brother and his wife, Sandy and Carrie Ritter when they were first married.
George and Hassie were members of New Zion A.M.E. Zion Church were George served as Trustee, Steward, and Class Leader.
George Henry was a shoemaker, operated a cane mill were he and his sons made homemade molasses, other occupations consisted of a carpenter, peddler, and a sawmill owner. Above all hardships, they made it over.
One of George Henry's favorite songs through hard trails was, Thank you Jesus.
George and Hassie lived and reared their 14 children on a farm in Hemp, NC and were tenant farmers for many years.
George Henry died December 29, 1934. He was buried in the New Zion Cemetery.
George Henry and Hassie had the following children: Lane, Julia, James Hood, Betty, William, Adam, Henry Thomas, Donnie (Don), Herbert, Solomon, Annie, Carrie, and Mary.
The family of George and Hassie celebrated their 35th Reunion June 28th 2008, Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Asheboro, NC. The Reunion was hosted by the Rev. William Brower's Family.
