As a young man, he worked in a stable a block off State Street in Salem, Ohio. He then worked in an iron foundry there before removing to a farm on Franklin Road. In later years, he gave up farming in favor of owning & operating a second-hand store. Today we would call it a consignment shop. He went to various estate sales, purchasing entire rooms of furniture and decorative items which he sold in his store.
