Lanier's Obituary:
Mr. Lanier Caldwell "Smitty" Smith of Scarbourgh Road, Newton, (Wicksburg community) passed away at his home Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, after a short illness. He was 81.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, in Wicksburg Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Tim Simmons and Brad Richards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before service time. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the family residence.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2346 West Main St., Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Smitty was born on Nov. 30, 1923, in Georgia to the late Swift and Blondine Caldwell Smith. He was a member of Wicksburg Assembly of God Church. He played the piano with a band until four weeks ago. Mr. Smitty was known as the "Piano Playing Man" in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. He retired after 26 years as an aircraft mechanic with DynCorp at Fort Rucker. He was a jewel in the family and will be greatly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Smith; his parents; and one brother, Charles Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Faye Smith of Wicksburg; one daughter, Lynn Barkalow and her husband, Todd of Wicksburg; three grandsons, Chris Smith and his wife, Beth, Sean Gancer, Lake Genard, all of Wicksburg; a great-grandson, Braylon Smith of Wicksburg; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Smith of Georgia; a nephew, Jason Smith of Georgia.
Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb, (334) 886-7777, is in charge of arrangements.
