He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Tyler, in 1861. He served as a bugler in Captain Douglas' Battery (formerly John J. Goode's Company), Company A, 1st Texas Artillery, until 1865, when his name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War in Citronelle, Alabama.
Abbey, a Presbyterian who never married, made his living as a miner until chronic illness made it impossible for him to support himself. He was admitted to the Texas Confederate Home on February 1, 1897, where he died on January 24, 1924.
