He served as a private in the 10th Georgia Infantry, CSA, enlisting in Fayetteville, GA on May 27, 1861. He was hospitalized at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA in May 1862 and again in February 1863 at a Confederate hospital in Charlottesville, VA. There is no further record of his Confederate service, but in September of 1864 he enlisted under the alias Albert Giles in the 18th Kentucky Infantry (Union) and served until he was released from duty in Ohio in November 1865.
He is buried by his wife who predeceased him, but he has no marker.
