James Redden Abrams NORFOLK - James R. "Jimmie" Abrams, 90, passed away April 4, 2009 in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 3, 1919, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, to the late Redmon Wrenn Abrams and Mary Ellen Jones. Jimmie served his country during World War II and was a German prisoner of war. He retired in 1974 as a sheet metal mechanic from Norfolk Naval Air Station. Jimmie was predeceased by his wife of 56 years in 2005, Syble Goodwin; grandson, Lonell Taylor; granddaughter, Elizabeth Radford; eight brothers, Wrenn, Elisha, William, Ernest, Ben, Walter, Willie and Charlie; and three sisters, Selma, Nellieford and Virginia. He is survived by his stepchildren and stepgrandchildren whom he accepted and loved as his own; son, Robert Taylor and wife Edith of Chesapeake; daughters, Doris Swindell and husband David of Chesapeake, Marion Pecsek and husband Joe of North Carolina, Eloise Leggett and husband Walter of Florida; sister, Mary Ellen Clary; 17 grandchildren, Deborah Wood, Rachel Rogers, Kathee Mullins, Donna McCurdy, David Swindell II, Joyce Swindell, Todd Swindell, Syble Shellito, Lucy Barrett, Cindy Herrington, William Radford, Marion Reed, Alex Radford, Joe Pecsek Jr., Paul, James and Jason Leggett; 35 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norfolk SPCA.
