Gabriel Marion Jones was the son of Joseph Moore Jones and Julia Ann Matilda Langwell Jones. Born in Trigg Co, Kentucky, his family emigrated to Sangamon Co, Illinois when he was an infant, later moving to Hancock Co, Illinois and then to McDonough Co, Illinois. In 1862, GM Jones enlisted in the 2nd IL Cavalry, being mustered in at Ft Butler in Springfield, Illinois. He brought his own horse. He was at the Siege of Vicksburg, Louisiana and was wounded at the Battle of Sabine Crossroads, Louisiana. He was mustered out in 1864. GM Jones married Hepzibah Davidson in Blandinsville, McDonough Co, Illinois, on 01 Oct, 1863. They were the parents of 8 children, Eva Ellen and Charley, who died as infants and are both buried in the Ft Madison Cemetery, Kirksville, Adair Co, Missouri; Lois May Jones Elliott, Fannie Grace Mitchell, Lola Viola Bradley, Cora Gertrude Johnson, and Nellie Myrtle Sobers; another son, Harry B Jones died as a child; GM Jones was a respected citizen of Republic Co, Kansas, a president of the GAR, and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
