Weaver and farmer from Ireland. Settled on Conc. 9 Malahide. Generally spelled his name "Johnson" but his son-in-law who was a "Johnston" erected his gravestone and used "Johnston." Two of his four sons used spelling "Johnson" and 2 used spelling "Johnston." Since Humphrey was an English name it's more likely surname was indeed "Johnson."

In the 1842 census at Malahide Twp., Elgin, Canada West lists Humphrey Johnson as a "Weaver" from Ireland. He is at S Lot 14, Conc. 9. He possess a "Hand Loom." His age is given as 30 to 60 and Margaret's age is not over 45.

In the 1851 census at Malahide Township (p. 34, lines 1-5), James "Johnson", 27, and his wife, Mary, 25 are living with Humphrey "Johnson", 60, and his wife, Margaret, 61, in. James is a labourer born in Ireland and Mary here also indicates that she was born in Ireland [I believe that this is in error]. Living in the same 1 story "Frame House" is John Johnson, 27, a labourer, born in Canada. They are all members of the Church of England. James, Mary and John are listed as "Not Members." John in this census is not listed as blind. In a "Log House" next to them is a Margaret Johnson, 52, a widow, born in Ireland, and Samuel Johnson, 30, also born in Ireland. They are members of the church of England. They are living next to a Donald McKinsey and his family and Thomas Clunas and his family and Adam Hagler and his family of ten and nearby the family of William Hall Sr.
It is possible that Samuel is a brother of James. Their names are elswhere more commonly spelled "Johnston."

In 1853, Humphey Johnson's son-in-law James Johnston (husband to his daughter Mary) signs a bond stating his agreement to take care of Humphrey and his new second wife in exchange for Humphrey's land at Lot 14 Malahide. A memorial was registered at St. Thomas for this bond on 29 April 1856. I would appear then that his daughter, Mary and her husband cared for him and his second wife, Catherine for ten years until his death in 1863. See transcription of the bond on this page

In 1859 Assessment rolls for Malahide Twp. James Johnson, son-in-law is given as the property owner and taxpayer, 140 acres at Conc. 9, Lot 14. He is next to Adam Hagler and Charles Hall.

In the 1861 census at Malahide Township (Div. 4, p. 92) is Humphrey Johnson, 85 (This is a 25 year increase from the census 10 years ago?) and his wife Catherine, 65. They are living with his daughter, Mary, and her husband James "Johnson" as his name is spelled in this census. James is 37, born in Ireland and Mary is 35 born in "Upper Canada." Also listed with them is John, who is blind, age 38, Jacob (he was possibly a Whitcraft), 16, and a Zadie M. age 3 (who married on a 19 January, Joseph G. Johnson, son of Humphrey's son Joseph Johnston), Samuel "Johnson", labourer, age 40, born in Ireland, and Margaret "Johnson", age 67, born in Ireland. They are all members of the Church of England. Jim McCallum believes that Jacob was probably a "Whitcraft" who was living with the Johnsons. The Margaret here may be the mother of James, Samuel, Margaret (wife of Wellington Johnson) and Maria Jane (Johnson) Newell. However is she old enough to be the wife of Susannah (Johnson) Partlow and John Johnson husband of Mary Mclaughlin?

Sims' History of Elgin Co. based on oral tradition indicates that Humphrey and Margaret Whitcraft were married in Ireland in 1806. Second marriage in St. Thomas Anglican Church records. Note that Sims contains many errors of fact.

Humphrey's g.s. gives that he died at age 84 would seem to contradict earlier sources. The gravestone inscription may be in error.

Inscription

Humphrey's g.s. gives that he died at age 84 would seem to contradict earlier sources. The gravestone inscription may be in error.

In / memory of / Humphrey JOHNSTON / died Jan. 11, 1868 / AE 86 yrs /Let me die the death of the righteous / and let my last end be like his. / J W Smyth London.

It is likely that his age was about 74. Humphrey and Margaret were originally buried in the the Old English Church Cemetery on Conc. 9 of Malahide on property given to the church by Humphrey in 1841. Their tombstones were later moved to the Aylmer Cemetery. Humphrey's tombstone gives his name as Johnston but he had written his name on several deeds as "Johnson." "Johnston" was the spelling that his son-in-law James used.
