Albert Joseph Gaeta, a longtime Ridgefielder who had been a fire chief and was active in many local organizations, died peacefully at his home in Crossville, Tenn., on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006 He was 80 years old.
Last Dec. 27, Mr. Gaeta returned to Ridgefield and threw a party at the Italian-American Club for his 80th birthday. Many friends and family turned out. "I have many good memories," he said then of his life in Ridgefield. "Ridgefield is still the greatest place."
Mr. Gaeta, the youngest son of the late Anthony and Natalie Gaeta, was born in Ridgefield on Dec. 28, 1925. He was a veteran of World War II, seeing service in Germany.
He owned Gaeta Plumbing and Heating as well as the Gaeta Shopping Center until his retirement in 1983 when he moved to Florida. He had lived in Boynton Beach until recently.
Mr. Gaeta served on the Police Commission from 1966 until 1976, was chief of the Ridgefield Volunteer Fire Department in 1967 and 1968, was president of the Italian American Club, and belonged to the Kiwanis Club and Ridgefield Boys Club. He served with many other organizations and civic committees over the years.
He was married to Emma Montesi for 38 years, and they had four children: Lorraine Medders of Plantsville, Nancy Ginsberg of New York City, Stephen Gaeta of New Canaan and the late Michael Gaeta.
Besides his children, Mr. Gaeta is survived by Marie Anderson, his companion of 22 years, and her children Raymond, Tina and Lenore; his three grandchildren, Jennifer, Brett and Emily; his four great grandchildren, Christian, Lauryn, Parker and Gianni; also Bruce, Dave, Anthony, Michael, David, Lisa, Paula and Heidi. He is also survived by his sister, Lucille Townsend of Milford, as well as nieces and nephews.
"He will always be loved and remembered by his family and friends," his family said.
A memorial service will be held here at St. Marys Church, Friday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception at the Community Center on Main Street.
