Elijah, known as Bud or E.P., was one of 7 children born to Silas and Katie (Spoons) Stephens in Morristown, Tennessee. Silas & Kate migrated to Texas and Oklahoma in the early 1900's. By 1920, Katie was widowed and relocated, with her near-adult children, to Scott County, Illinois. (Silas' date of death/final resting place are unknown.) After serving in WWI, both Elijah and his brother George David gained employment with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in Beardstown, Illinois. Elijah married Edna Morgan in 1929 and together they raised a son and daughter, Robert and Doris Stephens.
