ST. ANSGAR — Darwin L. Fossey, 78, of St. Ansgar, died Thursday (May 13, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Angar, with military rights by American Legion Post No. 358 of St. Ansgar. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar, and one hour prior to the services at the church. Darwin Lowell Fossey was born Feb. 12, 1926, in rural Stacyville, the son of Alf Oswald and Amanda Mary (Nelson) Fossey. He was baptized at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minn., on March 16, 1926, and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Toeterville, on March 17, 1940. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1944. He was inducted into the United States Navy in July of 1944, and served his country at Treasure Island, Calif. and San Jose, Calif., for two years during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to northern Iowa and purchased the garage in Toeterville, which he operated as Fossey Garage for 57 years until October of 2003. On Sept. 23, 1950, he married Betty Cummings at the Methodist Church in Austin, Minn. To this union two daughters were born, Sherry and Julaine. He enjoyed fishing in northern Minnesota and Canada, woodworking, playing cribbage, spending time with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and being with friends. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,Wayne and Merlin; sister-in-law, Ruby; one daughter, Sherry; and one grandson, Bruce. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Betty, of St. Ansgar; one daughter, Julaine Dammen and husband, Dennis, of Prior Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, Krista Anderson and husband, Todd, of Eden Prairie, Minn., Aaron Dammen, of Minneapolis, Minn., Karla Loften, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Brian Loften, of St. Cloud, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dominik, and Olivia; three sisters-in-law, Lois Yocum and husband, Glenn, of Austin, Minn., Alice Fossey, of Austin, Minn., and Phyllis Dunlavey and husband, Frank, of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Dick Cummings and wife, Dellene, of Austin, Minn., and Jim Cummings and wife, Deanna, of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
