Thomas served as a Major with the 7 Michigan Infantry Company-A. He enlisted on June 19, 1861. On June 19, 1861 he was promoted to Corporal and again on July 30, 1862 he was promoted to Captain. He was again promoted on July 30, 1862 to Major. Thomas was dismissed from duty. He also served in the 1 Michigan Volunteers Company-C during the Mexican War commissioned on December 1, 1847-July 23, 1848. He was finally discharged on April 20, 1863. He also served as a member and flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC Post-139; Department-Michigan.
