Businessman. Son of Nelson Wanamaker and of Elizabeth Deshong Kochersperger. He is the founder of Wanamaker's Department Stores of Philadelphia, New York and Paris. In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison appointed John Wanamaker as Postmaster General of the United States, an office he held until 1893. He is considered a pioneer merchant tycoon of the 19th and early 20th century pioneering novel concepts of advertising, modern-style department stores, customer satisfaction guarantees and employee benefit plans.
