Ex-Mat Star Dies Of Heart Ailment

Ted Thye, 75, who won international fame as a wrestler and wrestling promoter, was found dead Tuesday morning at his home, apparently the victim of a heart attack. His sister, Nettie Thye, who had lived with the deceased since 1958, found the body early Tuesday morning.

Thye, born in Frederick, South Dakota, Aug. 26, 1890, grew up in Minnesota and moved west in 1912. His first stop was Spokane, where he made a reputation as a wrestler before reaching Portland in 1915. Married Frances Christina Busmann on July 18, 1917.

As a professional he met the world's best and served for years as wrestling instructor at Multnomah Athletic Club where he schooled a number of fine athletes. When Thye retired from competition he promoted wrestling in the U.S. and Australia and at the time of his death had active interests down under.

He is survived by three brothers, Jules, Thye, Portland; John Thye, Salem; and Edward Thye, Northfield, Minn., who was twice governor and twice Senator from that state. In addition, three sisters survive, Nettie Thye, Portland; Mrs. Anna Watson, Minneapolis; and Mrs. Reka Tommrass, Kenyon, Minn.

Services will be held Friday, 11:30 a.m. at Finley's Morninglight Chapel with vault entombment at Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum.
