Gene Powell, 77, of Winfield, passed away Friday afternoon, March 25, 2005 at the Harry Hynes In-Patient Unit at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.
Gene was born Dec. 30, 1927, in Winfield, to Viola (Seaman) and Julius C. Powell. He was raised and educated in Winfield where he graduated from high school in 1945.
Following graduation, he attended the University of Kansas until 1946 when he left school to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy as a hospital apprentice second class. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home to help on the family farm. Later in 1946, he attended Southwestern College to further his education and to work for his father at Powell Construction.
On April 4, 1948, in Winfield, he and Jenny Finley married. The couple made their first home in Winfield. Gene worked on the flat line, modifying B-52s, at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita. From 1960 to 1963 he owned and operated Redi-Mix, after which he returned to Boeing and worked there until 1972.
In 1972, Gene and Jenny began managing Canterbury Village. Then, in 1982, Gene helped design and build Canterbury Heights, where he was the managing agent. They ceased managing Canterbury Village in 2000, but Gene was currently still managing agent for the Canterbury Heights.
Gene was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 10.
He coached Babe Ruth baseball for over 20 years. In 1966, he helped take a team to Williston, N.D., to compete in the Babe Ruth National Regional Tournament. He was a district commissioner of Babe Ruth and organized many tournaments at the Winfield Fairground. He also was a foster parent for over 20 years, making a difference in many young people’s lives.
His hobbies included spending time with his family, Kansas University sports, gardening and spending time at the lake house in Oklahoma.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patty Cadwell.
His family includes his wife, Jenny Powell, Winfield; a son and his wife, Gary Gene and Ginger Powell, Dacula, Ga.; two daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Richard Bolack, Garland, Texas, and Becky and Kent Maxson, McKinney, Texas; his mother, Viola Powell, Good Samaritan Village; a brother, Dick Powell, Winfield; nine grandchildren, Michell Bolack, Matthew Bolack, Sarah Thomas, Rachel Thomas, Melody Maxson, Leah Maxson, Patrick Powell, Chandler Powell and Chase Powell; and one great-grandchild, Brynn Murphy.
