JUPITER ISLAND, Florida - Frances Wood Fentress, 85, of Jupiter Island and Lake Forest, Ill. died Tuesday, March 19, 1996, at her home in Jupiter Island after a long illness.

A native of Augusta, Ga. she was a lifelong resident of Lake Forest. She was a seasonal resident of Jupiter Island.

Her parents were Gen. Robert E. Wood, former chairman of Sears, Roebuck & Co., and Mary Hardwick Wood.

As a girl, she lived in Panama where, at the time, her father was chief quartermaster during the construction of the Panama Canal. She was on the first boat to pass through the canal after its completion in 1914.

She was a graduate of the Ogontz School, Philadelphia.

She was active in social and civic affairs in the Chicago area. She was on the boards of Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital and the Chicago Metropolitan Housing Council.

She was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin Fentress Jr., former president and chairman of Allstate Insurance Co.

Survivors include two daughters, Audrey F. Gorter and Mary F. Grumhaus, both of Lake Forest; two sons, Calvin Fentress III of Winnetka, Ill., and Robert W. Fentress of Los Angeles; a sister, Sarah Wood Armour of Lake Forest; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Christ Memorial Chapel, Jupiter Island.

Those who wish may contribute to the Foshay Cancer Center, Jupiter Medical Center, 1210 S. Old Dixie Highway, Jupiter, Fla. 33458.

Arrangements are under the direction of Young & Prill Funeral Home, Stuart.
