Roman Catholic Bishop. Educator. He was the son of Richard and Mary Ann Dinneney. He was educated at La Salle College High School, La Salle College, and the Seminary of Saint Charles Borromeo, Overbrook, Philadelphia. He was ordained to the priesthood in Philadelphia by Archbishop Patrick J. Ryan. In addition to pastoral assignments, McDevitt was appointed Superintendent of Catholic Schools of Philadelphia in 1899. In this position, he gained a national reputation as a Catholic educator and administrator. He was appointed Bishop of Harrisburg in 1916. McDevitt served on the Committee of the National Catholic Welfare Conference and was Chairman of the Catholic Press Department. Serving three terms as president of the American Catholic Historical Society, he was a nationally recognized historian and writer.
