A graduate of Bald Butte Country School, Ed worked for Leo Druffel on his farm until 1949, for Washington State University until 1950, then for Potlatch Corp. in Lewiston until retiring in 1982.
Ed married Esther B. Weber June 7, 1948, at St. Boniface Church in Uniontown.
Ed was a member of Holy Family Parish, a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Elks, Moose and Eagles, past president of the Pautler Senior Center and Holy Family Home and School president.
Ed loved nothing more in his retirement years than spending time with family and friends. He was happiest when outside and kept an immaculate yard and garden. Ed was well known for the annual sausage dinners at Holy Family Parish. He mixed and smoked sausages according to his family recipe, and it gave him great joy to serve it to his family, friends and the community.
He is survived by Esther, his wife of 59 years; and children, Dianne Marshall (John), Dan Frei (Katie), Marilyn Allen (Dorian), Marge VanDyk (Mike), Steve Frei (Vicki), Mike Frei (Vickie), and Kathy Harber; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Semler and Cecelia Dober.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Tony, Joseph and James; three sisters, Helen Broemmeling, Hilda Frei and Mary Broemmeling; one grandson, Justin Frei; and two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Matthew McCall.
A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Holy Family Church in Clarkston, with funeral Mass immediately following. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at the Colton Cemetery.
