James C. Petit de Mange, age 84 of Wilmington, Delaware died September 25, 2005 at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. James was born August 5, 1921 in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Calver S. and Mary (Hynes) Petit de Mange. James served his country in World War II as a staff sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army Air Corps. He survived severe injuries during the allied invasion of Sicily in June 1943, when the C-47 troop transport aircraft in which he was flying was shot down over the Mediterranean. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, and the American Legion. He worked for Sun Ship, the Chester Times, and retired from The Wilmington News Journal. James was a standout athlete as a student at St. Roberts High School in Chester, Pa., achieving All Catholic Honors in football, and played semi-pro football for club teams in Media, Pa. and Wilmington.
James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn (Moran) Petit de Mange; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Thomas Ludlam of Hockessin, Del.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Gregory Sarnecki of Hockessin, Del.; son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Janice Petit de Mange of Sykesville, Md.; son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Beth Petit de Mange of Dover, Del.; daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Paul "Rusty" Shotwell of Pike Creek, Del.; brothers, Joseph Petit de Mange of Aston, PA, John Petit de Mange of St. Michaels, Md. and William Petit de Mange of Wilmington, Del.; sister, Joan Crisanti of Wallingford, Pa.; and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and his granddaughter, Lauren Shotwell.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2503 Centerville Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 11:30 am, where friends may visit in the church after 10 am. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.
