She was the first wife of General Henry R. Guss, and died at age 37. They had three children together: George, William, and Elizabeth. Eliza's sister Mary Ann Bonsall Laycock married Isaac Cody and they were the parents of "Buffalo Bill" William F. Cody. Buffalo Bill writes in his autobiography that in the 1870s during a trip to the east he visited West Chester in search of his relatives, only to learn that his aunt Eliza had died quite a few years before. At first they did not even know that he was the famous Buffalo Bill.
