Samuel Guss was the son of Samuel (Simon) Guss and Barbara Knerr Guss. He first married Sevenia Elizabeth Ruhl on April 26, 1821 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Together they had six sons: George (died in infancy), Samuel (died in infancy), General Henry Ruhl, Samuel, Levi, and Francis Marion Guss. Sevenia died at age 28 in 1833 and the following year on April 12, 1834 Samuel married Ann Laycock. They are not known to have had children.
