Lee Charlson Fortney, formerly of Battle Creek, died December 26, 2012, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and family at the hospice facility at Del Ray, Florida. He was 54. Lee was born in Sherman, Texas, on January 20, 1958, to Cecil Garfield Fortney and Leah Charlson Fortney. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Fortney, his son, Max Fortney, his daughter, Samantha Fortney, her partner Robert Johansen, and their three children, Alexis, Addison, and Audrey. Lee is also survived by his sisters Cheryl Marotta of Southern Pines, NC; Lynne Vaughan of Chicago, IL; Jackie Boudreau of Bourbonnais, IL; and Kris Patton of Southern Pines, NC; and, his brothers Scott Fortney of Montpelier, VT, and Bradley Fortney, of Battle Creek, MI. Lee was a graduate of Lakeview High School and worked primarily in the construction trades in the Kalamazoo area. He was an avid fisherman, a passion he acquired from many Saturday mornings fishing with his father on area lakes and during summer vacations in Spooner, Wisconsin. Lee was a great friend and a compassionate and caring soul. He suffered debilitating medical conditions for most of his last five years with great courage. Lee maintained a warm sense of humor grounded in great honesty that conveyed to those who knew him a deep wisdom. Lee will be greatly missed as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
