Mrs. Frederick S. Gates, of Port Byron, who had been in poor health all summer, was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Davenport about a month ago for treatment. Her many friends in Moline and Port Byron and in this locality will be pained to learn that death ended her misery yesterday at the hospital named. Her fatal trouble was a species of kidney disease. The remains were conveyed to Port Byron on the afternoon C. M. & St. Paul train yesterday. The lady was about 60 years of age. Her maiden name was Emma L. Moore. She was the daughter of George Moore, one of the pioneers of Port Byron, who built the old DeSoto house there and was its proprietor for some time. The mother of Mrs. Gates, who is now Mrs. Nathaniel Dorrauce, survives her, as does her husband, Frederick S. Gates, president of the Port Byron Lumber Co , and her brothers George and Albert, George at Port Byron, and Albert at Hastings, Neb. Mrs. John Zollinger of Port Byron, wife of the ex-postmaster, is a sister of the deceased lady. She was married to Mr. Gates at Port Byron in November, 1861, since which time the family has twice removed to Arkansas, returning each time to Port Byron. Three children were born of the marriage, all of whom have died: Edwin W. died in infancy in 1875; Flora L. attained the age of 16 years, and died in 1885, and Mabel lived to the age of 20 years, dying in 1887.
