Winifred "Winnie" Thorrington, age 89, a resident of Laurel Grove Assisted Living Center in Manitowoc, entered into eternal life on Friday, October 14, 2005, at Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at Laurel Grove Assisted Living Center, Shady Lane, and Aurora Medical Center for the exceptional care that they provided to Winnie.
She was born on April 3, 1916, in Houghton, Mich., to the late Arthur and Valerie DeMars Wimmer. [NB: There is an Arthur Wimmer, 1893-1982, in Houghton, Michigan, with a findagrave record: 67388386]
She graduated from Houghton High School in 1933 and then continued her bachelor's degree in Home Economics. During the next five years, she taught at Grand Marais, Michigan, and also Newberry, Michigan. Winifred then became employed as supervisor for the Farm Security Home Management for the Department of Agriculture.
On January 28, 1942, Winifred married William H. Thorrington at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Rectory in Houghton, Mich. In 1957, she and her husband moved to Manitowoc where they have resided since. William preceded her in death on June 24, 2002.
Winifred was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was always very fond of cats, especially Tootsie.
Survivors include two sons: William A. (Barbara) Thorrington, New Berlin, and Richard J. (Sharon) Thorrington, Manitowoc; one daughter: Mary (James) Skarda, Manitowoc; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends surviving.
Winifred was preceded in death by her husband, William, and also by a sister, Carmen Stimac.
There will be a visitation at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and at St. Francis of Assisi, with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, Kossuth.
