Charles Burnley Darden Sr., 74, retired farmer and skilled wood craftsman, died Sept. 13, 2004, at his residence. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Hunter Darden Sr. and Sallie Lankford Darden .
Mr. Darden was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and a former member of the Forks of the River Ruritan Club. He was a former National Guardsman, a former member of Southampton County Planning Commission and a 50-year member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 151, AF&AM. He was an avid sportsman and a member of the Forks of the River Hunt Club.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lucy Delessio Darden ; two sons, Charles Burnley Darden Jr. and wife Deborah and Michael Lankford Darden , all of Franklin; a sister, Dorothy D. Cotton; two brothers, Hunter Darden Jr. and Thomas I. Darden , all of Franklin; two grandchildren, Crystal D. Swarmer and husband Chris of Courtland and Charles B . "Trey" Darden III of Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Christina and Carolyn Swarmer. Mr. Darden was predeceased by a sister, Louise D. Vaughan and a brother, Harvey Darden .
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Roger Crump officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggest memorials be made to Franklin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 179, Franklin, VA 23851 or Courtland Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 449, Courtland VA 23837.
