Dr. Abner Lord Cass, Sr passed away at his home in Chicago on August 31, 1886 following a lingering illness at the age of sixty-nine.

He was educated at Kenyon College and received his professional degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He was recognized as one of the leading citizens in town. During the war he was a member of the military committee and for a number of years he was a member of the Board of Education and took great interest in educational affairs. He served one term in the State Senate, and was Coshocton county's candidate in the Congressional convention.

By inheritance and by personal acquisition he became possessed of considerable property. His family was quite historical: he was the grandson of Major Jonathon Cass of Revolutionary fame, his father was a brother of General Lewis Cass, and his brother is the President of the Pittsburgh-Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kerr Cass of Pittsburgh; his parents, George Washington Cass and Sophia Lord Cass; and sons, John Jay Cass and Abner Lord Cass Jr.

He is survived by three children: George W. Cass, a lawyer in Chicago, Mary Agnes Cass, who has been at home with her father, and Joseph Kerr Cass, a paper manufacturer of Pittsburgh. Also surviving him is a brother, Dr. Edward Cass of Dresden.
