Charles Peter Gaver was known as Peter. He was the son of George Washington and Anna Maria "Mary"(Raymer) Gaver. He was one of eleven children.

He married Caroline Palmer in Frederick County, Maryland. They obtained the marriage license on September 18, 1847. The lived next to her parents in the 1850 census. Her parents owned the old Gaver homestead "Land of Promises" in the Ellerton area. The house still stands and the smaller building was built by Daniel Gaver in the 1700's. Daniel also donated the land for the old log St. John's Lutheran Church on Church Hill in the Ellerton area. Daniel was Peter's great-grandfather.

Peter did a variety of work as a laborer and by the 1870 census was a cooper. The Civil War was being fought all around them.

They had eleven children:
