Chicago Mayor. He was elected as a Whig to serve as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois, serving from 1838 to 1839. During the Civil War he opposed prosecuting the war against the South, and was arrested in 1864 for attempting to free Confederate prisoners who were being held at Chicago's Camp Douglas. However, the Military Tribunal (held in Cincinnati, Ohio) examined the evidence and had to acquit him. His wife, Mary, also arrested, was held as a witness, but never prosecuted.
