Mary Elizabeth (McCullough) Abbott passed away Sunday April 25, 2010 at her apartment at Concord Park, after a short illness. She was in her 93rd year.

Born in Brockway, Pa., on May 22, 1917, she was the eighth and last child of Anna and Hugh McCullough. She graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women, later re-named Chatham University. After receiving her advanced degree in library science from University of Pittsburg, she became a children's librarian in Wilkensburg, Pa.

In 1942 she married Ward D. Abbott and returned to his hometown of Orchard Park, New York where they raised their two daughters. She was active in St. Marks Episcopal Church, scouting, and in her community. She was a member of the Second Mother's Club in Orchard Park. She loved antiques and worked for many years in the Antiques Building at the Erie County Fair. During their life together, she and her husband planted over two thousand trees.

She moved to Concord, after the death of her husband to be near her daughters, Jeannie Abbott and Lynn Abbott Macone. With her gentle demeanor and sense of humor, she was a favorite with both the other residents and the staff at Concord Park. But it was her artistic ability that drew the most interest. Looking at the medical debris from her insulin shots one day, she began creating low relief sculptures called "by-product constructivism". Her many Concord friends added to her materials and she created new sculptures daily. She has exhibited at Concord Park and at the Musketaquid Arts and Environment Earth Month Art Show for the last five years.

Funeral Service will be private. Arrangements were under the care of Susan M. Dee and Charles W. Dee, Funeral Directors, Dee Funeral Home of Concord and Brown Funeral Home in Orchard Park. For guest book, please visit www.deefuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions to her memory may be made to The Musketaquid Arts and Environment Program of Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts, 40 Stow Street, Concord, MA 01742 or to Haile High, the free computer school for handicapped children in Jamaica founded by Lynn and Sandy Macone, www.hailehigh.com.
