The son of William Miller & Elizabeth (Parker) Henderson, in 1860 he was a clerk living on his wealthy family's farm in North Middleton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah E. Chambers but children, if any, are unknown.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Carlisle April 21, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a sergeant with Co. A, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). Promoted to 1st sergeant January 12, 1862, he was shortly thereafter furloughed home to recover from an as yet unknown illness but instead died from the disease.
