Age 90, passed away on March 27, 2013. He was born on July 12, 1922 in Eagle the son of Russell and Emma (Haueter) Moyer. During his childhood he spent working on the family farm, milking cows before and after school. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a gathering of many family and friends. Robert was a proud, brave Marine in 1942 he joined the U.S. Marine Corp, 3rd Division Motor Transport and fought in WWII in the Pacific Theater until the end of 1945 when he was honorable discharged. He crossed over the Equator on his 21st birthday on the way to the far east. He was stationed in Guam, Guadalcanal and finally Iwo Jima where he was involved in the famous battle. He witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. After being discharged from the Marines on December 23, 1945 he proposed to Betty Whitmore on Christmas Eve, the two had corresponded throughout the war. They were married on March 14, 1946 and lived on their farm on West Grand River most of their 57 years together. He was a member of the Portland Masonic Lodge F&A.M. #31 and O.E.S. #258, Cole-Briggs American Legion #48 in Grand Ledge where he was member for 67 years and was the Post Commander in 1960. Bob was also a member of the V.F.W Post #4090. He was active with the North Eagle Cemetery Society, attended the Eagle Fair every year and enjoyed camping and traveling with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty in 2003. He is survived by his children: Jim (Val) Moyer, Kirk (Linda) Moyer, and Cheryl (Jim) DuMont; 11 grandchildren: Mike (Kathy) Moyer, Ken (Sue) Moyer, Kim (Kevin) Lay, Liz Hoppes, Heath (Nikki) Moyer, Susan (Kevin) Ray, Stacey (Jason) Knapp, Jody Moyer, Jessica Moyer, Samantha Swenson, Zach DuMont; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: John (Marge) Moyer, Barry "Bud" Moyer, Eib Wieber, Eleanor Ackerson, Margaret (Ron) Skinner, Bee Nowak; sister-in-law, Madeline Cole; many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2013 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will follow at North Eagle Cemetery. Military grave side services will be provided by the U.S. Marine Corp and Cole-Briggs American Legion Post #48. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
