"Walter W. Hill Sr., 87, of Poulsbo died Wednesday at his home. He was born Sept. 12, 1905, in Portland, Ore., where he was raised. He attended Jefferson High School and Benson Polytechnic before beginning a machinist and welder apprenticeship with Southern Pacific Railway.
In 1928 he married Helen E. Pfeifer in Vancouver, Clark County. The couple moved to Bremerton in 1938 and Mr. Hill began employment as a machinist and welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In 1945 they moved to Poulsbo. Mr. Hill retired as a welder foreman in 1967 and opened Hill's Rhododendron Nursery which he operated for 20 years, hybridizing and developing new strains of rhododendrons.
He was an active Sunday school teacher at Breidablik Church for over 30 years, and at the time of his death was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. He enjoyed watching sports events and was an enthusiastic fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; two sons, Walter Jr. and James, both of Poulsbo; a daughter, Caroline H. Quinlan of Poulsbo; and a sister, Alice Nilsen of Gladstone, Ore. A son, Marvin, was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. Private interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, Stone Chapel . . . ."
