HEYER, HOWARD E., M.D.. a retired cardiologist, died peacefully at the age of 93 at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas on April 6, 2005. A longtime resident of Dallas, Dr. Heyer was born in Chicago, Illionis. After being awarded his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois in 1937, he continued active research work in the field of cardiovascular disease, earning an M.S. in internal medicine in 1941. With the advent of World War II, Dr. Heyer was assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Corps, in which he served from 1941 to 1946. He was Chief of the Medical Service in the 71st Station Hospital, Fiji Islands from June, 1942 to October, 1944, attending to the evacuated wounded from the Pacific theater. Upon his discharge with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Heyer moved to Dallas to serve as a Fellow in Cardiology at the newly founded Southwestern Medical School under Dr. Tinsley Harrison. Dr. Heyer had a long affiliation with Southwestern Medical School. He held the position of Clinical Professor of Medicine from 1950 until his retirement in 1978. He authored numerous articles on cardiovascular disease, and served on the editorial board of the American Heart Journal from 1949 to 1964. In the course of his career as a physician, Dr. Heyer was twice elected President of the Dallas Heart Association. He opened his private practice in the early 1950's. In 1966 Dr. Heyer was named Chief of the Medical Service at the newly established Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, a post he held until 1969. In May of 1966 he admitted the first patient to the Medical Service at Presbyterian Hospital.

In his private life, Dr. Heyer was actively involved in Episcopal charities for many years. He was an accomplished photographer, an eager traveler, a lover of classical music, and an enthusiastic, if occasionally frustrated, golfer. Dr. Heyer was preceded in death in 2004 by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mayvis Sheimo Heyer. He is survived by his loving family: his son John Heyer of Dallas, whose diligent and devoted care sustained Dr. Heyer in his last years; his daughter Susan Heyer of Los Angeles; his son and daughter-in-law Dr. Robert A. and Caroline Heyer of Charlotte, N.C.; his grandchildren Ashley Heyer Casey of Baton Rouge, LA., and Dr. Robert H. Heyer of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and his two great grandchildren, Caroline and William Casey of Baton Rouge.

Special gratitude is owed to Mrs. Maria Luisa Pliego of Carrollton, Texas for her kindness and generosity to Dr. Heyer and his family. Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Sparkman Hillcrest chapel. Rev. Terry Jones presiding.
