DIED FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTION IN FRANCE.

1944 - Shortly after a member of his family had posted a Christmas package to Sergeant Henry C. DeLong Saturday morning, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. DeLong, 312 Walnut St., Catasauqua, received a War Department telegram, stating that the young sergeant had died Aug. 29 of wounds received in action in France on Aug. 28. He had previously been reported seriously wounded. DeLong, recently promoted to the rank of sergeant, was 19 years old on Sept. 9. Overseas two months, he had been in the service since December, 1943. He was a former employe of the Catasauqua Coal and Ice Co., and a member of Salem Evangelical and Reformed church, Catasauqua. Sergeant DeLong is the fourth member of the congregation to have been killed in action. He was born in Mechanicsville, the son of Harry and Mary (Saeger) DeLong. In addition to his parents, surviving are eleven brothers and sisters. They are Mrs. Albert Werner, Northampton; Private First Class Robert, in England; Seaman First Class Ernest, in Connecticut; Mrs. Herbert Wolfinger, Fleetwood, R. 1, and Ruth, Beatrice, Raymond, Wayne, Doris, Curtis and James, at home.

1948 - Accompanied by an escort, the body of Sgt. Henry Claire DeLong, 38th U.S. Infantry, will arrive at the Lehigh Valley station, this city, at 1:17 p.m. Wednesday. It will be taken to the Oliver S. Burkholder funeral home, 3rd and Walnut Sts., Catasauqua, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday by Rev. Willard A. Kratz, pastor of Salem Evangelical and Reformed church, Catasauqua. Interment will be made with military honors in Fairview cemetery, W. Catasauqua. Members of Catasauqua post, American legion, and Pvt. Joseph F. Kennedy post, VFW, will serve as pall bearers. Sgt. DeLong was born at Mechanicsville, Sept. 9, 1925, a son of Harry J. and Mary, nee Saeger, DeLong, who now reside at 312 Walnut St., Catasauqua. He attended the Catasauqua public schools and prior to entering the military service Jan. 1, 1944, worked for the Lehigh Valley Ice Co., that place. He was wounded in Action Aug. 28, 1944, and died the following day in a base hospital in France. There survive his parents, six brothers, Ernest, Bath R. 1; Robert, Slatington R. 1; Raymond, Wayne, Curtis and James, at home; and five sisters, Miriam, wife of Albert Werner, Northampton R. 1; Beatrice, wife of Robert Seibert, Catasauqua; Olive, wife of Herbert Wolfinger, Laureldale; Ruth and Doris, at home.
