Born in 1912, Mary was one of 11 children of Thomas and Mary Skrzypek. At about the age of 15, the family moved to Jamaica, New York from Jenners, Pennyslvania. She likely attended John Adams, H.S. in Jamaica, New York.

She was killed, at the age of 19, in an accident while attempting to take a short-cut on the Long Island Rail Road (Jamaica station) tracks in a sudden rainstorm. Mary was electrocuted when she slipped and hit the third rail, despite attempts to save her by at least two others and a physician on the scene.

Her sister Catherine was saved when a young boy got on another set of tracks and flagged down an oncoming train where her sister, Catherine, had fallen -- and in time to have the engineer stop the train.
