Galen de Longchamps was the son of Nevada poet Joanne de Longchamps and the grandson of prominent architect Frederic DeLongchamps. Most everyone, including his parents, called him by his middle name, Dare.

He graduated from Reno High School and the University of California at Santa Cruz with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He continued to study psychology at the University of Michigan in 1975.

He disliked the university and returned to his parent's home in Reno in 1976. Soon after arriving, he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in an old schoolhouse his parents had bought 2 years earlier. He was 26 years old.
