She was the third child of seven born to Herman "Jake" Clem and Orion Irene (Grooms) Clem in Limestone County, Alabama on May 2, 1931. Her younger years were spent in Limestone County, Alabama and then moved to Knoxville with her father's job transfer. She graduated from Knoxville High School and then met and married James H. Maples, Sr. who preceded her in death. They were married in Rossville, Georgia in 1946. To this union they had seven children.
Evelyn was an active member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville and had been a member of Smithwood Baptist Church and West Hills Baptist Church. After a long work career with various companies in Knoxville, Evelyn then returned to school and received a degree in Computer Programming. She finished her career with Colonial Freight Lines as a Bookkeeper.
After her and Jim's retirement, they enjoyed world travel, which she continued after Jim's passing, with family and friends. She also enjoyed family tree research, needlepoint, volunteer work, watching and attending Tennessee Titan games, singing with the Golden Notes Choir at First Baptist Church and the WynnWard Sunday school class.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, her husband and two daughters; an infant Cassandra Sue Maples and Elizabeth "Beth" Prichard.
Evelyn is survived by her sons (daughter-in-laws); Rev. James H. (Robyn) Maples, Jr., Warren (Dee) Maples and Joel (Jeannie) Maples, daughters (son-in-law); Rebecca Doty and Carol (Joe) Macha, brothers; John and James "Bud" Clem, sisters; Shirley Hurst, Phyllis (Tom) Baer, Carol Faulkner, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Ethel Powell.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 in the chapel of Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel officiated by Reverend James H. Maples, Jr., Reverend Dave Ward and Reverend Lee Fox.
Family and friends will meet at 1:15 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery (Lyons View Pike) for a 1:30 p.m. interment service.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the mortuary.
