Olympic Gold Medalist. A sprinter, he helped the United States capture top honors in the 4x100 Relay at the 1968 Mexico City Olympiad, in the process setting a then world record. Raised in Southern California, he was a 1967 graduate of Los Angeles' Manual Arts High School and attended Los Angeles City College prior to enrolling at San Jose State University. In the 1968 AAU Championships Smith tied a world record by running the 100 metre dash in 9.9 seconds then in Mexico he ran the third leg of the 4x100 as his team took Gold with a time of 38.24 seconds. Smith continued active competition for a time during which he contributed to the Spartans' 1969 NCAA Track championship, earned a degree in sociology, spent many years working for the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department, and was inducted into the San Jose State University Sports Hall of Fame. He died in a hospice facility.
