William was the eldest son of Joseph Carle. He married 18-year-old Jane Graham when he was 27, and they had two daughters, Maria and Araminta. Sadly, Jane died after only three years, on 10 February 1839, leaving him with two toddler daughters.

William and the girls lived near his parents who helped take care of them, and in 1842, on Valentine's Day, he married Mary "Polly" Feeley. Their first child, Sarah Jane, was born just 10 months later, and over the next 12 years, 6 more children followed.

William was a merchant and served for a time in the Ohio state legislature. He was active in community affairs.

Unfortunately, he contracted consumption, and died at the age of 48. Polly never remarried.
