Mortimer S. Lancaster

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mortimer Sams Lancaster, age 70, husband of Bobbie Jean Mitchell Lancaster of 148 McArthur Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, October 26, 2007.

Born in Union County, SC on February 10, 1937, he was a son of the late Boyce Pittman and Alice Sams Lancaster.

Mr. Lancaster was a graduate of Jonesville High School and attended Clemson University. He retired from Life of Georgia Insurance Company after 30 years of service. Following retirement, he continued to work in the insurance business for Atlantic Coast Life and also for the Spartanburg Herald. Mr. Lancaster served in the U.S. Army Reserves for more than 33 years. He joined Croft Baptist Church in 1962, where he was a member of the Norman Collins Sunday School Class, served as a deacon, and coached the men's softball team. His family will especially remember him for his love of cooking.

In addition to his wife of more than 49 years, he is also survived by two daughters, Dianne Wilkins and husband Gary of Spartanburg and Reneé Cook and husband Dennis of Moore; two sons, Ray Lancaster and wife Michelle of Inman and Rhett Lancaster and wife Julie of Spartanburg; a brother, Boyce Lancaster and wife Teenie of Ware Shoals; two sisters, Evelyn Vaughn and husband Charles of Anderson and Jacquelyn Roach and husband Ernest of Rock Hill. He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Lancaster, who was killed in action in Korea.

One of his greatest joys was being involved in the lives of his grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Billy, Benjamin, Katie, Ryan, Alice, Ashleigh, William, Steven, John Tyler, and Murphy; and one great-grandchild, Bryce.

The family will receive friends Sunday, October 28, 2007 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 29, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Croft Baptist Church with The Reverend Joe Dempsey presiding. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Croft Baptist Church Family Life Center, 4190 East Croft Circle, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or to the Croft Ruritan Club, 134 Cardinal Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.

The family is at the home.
