Donald was born July 24, 1929, in Valders. He was the son of the late Arthur and Anna Rammer Thiel.
He was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1948 and then went on to continue his education at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
He served with the United States Army overseas during the Korean War 1951-1953. After being honorably discharged he returned to Manitowoc and became employed with Manitowoc Engineering and then later with Wisconsin Fittings until he retired in 1974.
On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Marion Waack at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc.
Donald was a member of First German Evangelical Lutheran Church and the AMVETS Post No. 99. Donald greatly enjoyed the hobby farm that he and his wife Marion took care of.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Marion; five children: Barbara (John) Eichhorst, Brillion; Kenneth (Lisa) Thiel, Howards Grove; Jeffrey Thiel, Lake Elmo, Minn.; Thomas Thiel, Manitowoc; Terry (Kim) Thiel, Howards Grove; nine grandchildren; three sisters: Marion (Arnold) Malek, Manitowoc; Lila LaBelle, Menasha; Shirley Graykowski, Manitowoc; three sisters-in-law: Germaine Thiel, Two Rivers; Evelyn Thiel, Two Rivers; Mary Thiel, Kiel; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and his pet dog, Nina. He was preceded in death by one great-grandson: Nathan Eichhorst; nine brothers: Willard, Lester, Gilbert, Elton, Robert, Edward, Arthur, Vernon and Roger Thiel; three sisters: Carolyn Fisset, Olene Thiel and Madeline Thiel.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1033 South Eighth Street, Manitowoc. Officiating will be Rev. David Rosenow. Following the services in church, in respect and honor for his service to our country, AMVETS Post No. 99 will present the United States flag to Donald's wife, Marion. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and then at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The family requests memorials be directed to First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Lakeshore Humane Society or the donor's choice.
The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
