Wife of physician Jonathan Dayton and aunt of the American statesman of the same name, Mrs. Dayton had resided in the "Cannon Ball House" on Morris Avenue, so-named because it had been struck by a cannon ball during the Revolutionary War Battle of Springfield in June 1780. Widowed just 2 years earlier, Mrs. Dayton had turned her home into a tavern stop after her husband's death. The couple were the parents of young Fanny Dayton, also buried in the family plot.
