The first Manitowoc county soldier to lose his life in the Korean conflict was
recorded Friday.
Mr. and Mr. George Sekadlo, of route 1, Two Rivers, were advised in a telegram
from the war department their son, Pfc. Gerald Ben Sekadlo, 20, had died in a
Tokyo hospital. A member of an infantry unit in Korea, he suffered a cut in the
foot while in the front line fighting. Infection set in and he was flown to
Japan where he died in the military hospital.
Funeral plans for the soldier will await word from the war department on when
the casket will arrive in San Francisco. Services will be held in Mishicot.
Pfc. Gerald Sekadlo was born on the homestead farm in the town of Mishicot in
1930 and after attending the district school enrolled in the Mishicot high school
where he was graduated in June, 1948. On Sept. 26, 1948, he enlisted in the army
and received his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He served 15 months on Okinawa
in the southwest Pacific and was home on furlough in May.
Returning to Fort Lewis, Wash., he was moved to Japan and was a member of one of
the first army units moved to Korea when the conflict started there.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sekadlo, of route 1, Two Rivers;
sister, Mrs. Calvin Larch of East Lansing, Mich.; and a brother, Roger of Lafayette,
Ind.
