He kept a journal which chronicled his trip to and experiences in California in 1852-1854...

Charles was coming back to Michigan from California, and he died of "consumption" at sea on the steamship "Northern Light" which was on the return leg of the trip from San Juan del Sur (Nicaragua) to New York.
