Jacob along with his brothers, Frederick and Andrew were early pioneers in the part of Wood Co., Va, which later became Wirt Co., VA in 1848 (1863 WV). He is buried by his wife on the old Bumgarner farm of Jacob III, his grandson, at Mingo Bottom near Wells Lock , Elizabeth, Wirt County, West Virginia.
Jacob was often referred to as Jacob I, his son Jacob as Jacob II and his son Jacob as Jacob III.
