He studied at Villanova University for a year on an academic scholarship before entering St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood. He was ordained in 1958. For 32 years, he taught religion and church and European history at Cardinal Dougherty in Philadelphia. His specialty was the French Revolution. He later became a parish priest. He was a sports fan who enjoyed listening to classical music.
