Former Resident Here Dies at 74

William C. Bennie, 74, a former resident of Green Bay and brother of Robert T. Bennie, De Pere, died in Miami, Fla., on Jan. 21. He left Green Bay in 1920 and had been a resident of Miami for the past 20 years.
A former circus owner, Shakespearian actor and playwright, Mr. Bennie was also a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He lived in this city from 1905 to 1920, after which he organized and operated W. C. Bennie's Great American Circus. He later sold the circus because of his health.
As a playwright, he wrote and produced two plays, "The Indian Princess" and "The Willows", which were successful for several seasons. Following the sale of his circus he became associated with the late Harry Kellar, dean of magicians, and later with Houdini, the handcuff king.
In addition to his brother here, Mr. Bennie is survived by a sister and a daughter, Virginia, who lives in Miami. He was buried in the Florida city.

** I am not sure if he is buried in Green Bay or if this headstone is a cenotaph.
