BEDMINSTER -- Otto C. Kettling, 85, died Wednesday (Nov. 19, 2003) at Harborside-Woods Edge Care Center in Bridgewater.
He was born in Elizabeth and had lived in South Plainfield for 42 years before moving to Bedminster five years ago.
Mr. Kettling was a mechanical engineer in the major project division of S.S. White of Holmdel for many years, retiring in 1983. He previously worked as a mechanical engineer with General Motors Design Center in Detroit, RCA in Harrison and Singer in Port Elizabeth.
He was a graduate of Newark State College of Engineering, receiving a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as an aviation cadet.
Mr. Kettling was a professional musician, having played the saxophone, clarinet and flute. He was a 50-year plus member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 151 in Elizabeth and served on the board of directors. He also was a member of Local 746 in Plainfield. He founded his own band called the "Innovators" during the 1970s.
He was a member and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen.
Mr. Kettling is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie D'Espies Kettling and a daughter, Dawn D. Kettling of Bridgewater.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster.
